Scope and Content Glasgow University Library and the Hunterian Gallery, University of Glasgow, University Avenue, Glasgow Glasgow University Library was designed in 1961 and built 1965-81. The adjacent Hunterian Art Gallery was built 1971-81. Both buildings were designed by architect William Whitfield, and feature towering elements of hammer-dressed concrete and glass. The main tower of the library gained an extra glazed storey c.1992. This shows the library with its tall towers to the right, and the Hunterian Gallery to the left, with its recreation of Charles Rennie Mackintosh's house in Southpark Avenue built into its concrete walls. This structure houses a fine collection of Mackintosh interiors. The angular blocks of the various structures are faced in concrete, glass and pebble-dashed panels. The library and gallery were designed to complement each other, and include similar design features and structures. The lower levels of the Gallery create a visual 'base' from which the tall tower of the library can be seen to rise. This building has been selected as one of Scotland's key 20th-century Modern architectural monuments. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
