Desk Based Assessment (31 August 2017)

Garvel House was built in 1777 for merchant and banker Baillie James Gammell, and the house and estate are first depicted on Ainslie’s 1796 Map of the County of Renfrew. The house and estate were sold in the 1860s to the Greenock Harbour Trust with a view to extending dock facilities, with the Garvel dry dock (NS27NE 31.01), completed in 1871, built immediately to the north of the house. Surveyed by RCAHMS in 1997 (SC 847798), the house was used as offices for many years but was demolished in 2004 following a fire.

Information from HES Survey and Recording (AMcC) 31 August 2017.
