Standing Building Recording (6 May 2021)
NT 57088 38268 A Level 2 historic building survey was carried out, on 6 May 2021, of Rhymer’s Mill, Earlston, prior to the alteration of the existing structure. The work was required as a condition of planning consent for the development.
Rhymer’s Mill is a classic example of 19th-century industrial design and a sole survivor within Earlston of its water-powered industrial heritage. The building’s exterior reflects its mid-19th- century construction, with randomly coursed stone rubble walls and standardised internal layout. Whilst the mill has undergone significant changes over the last two centuries, at present it is stripped back to close to its original state with ongoing works retaining much of its original character.
