Ardmaleish is a working farmsteading that comprises a mixture of 19th century farm buildings and modern sheds, none of which has been recorded in detail. ‘Ardmalish’ is first depicted on Blaeu’s Atlas of Scotland, published in 1654. A century later, Roy’s Military Map (1747-55) shows a settlement immediately W of the road, which is shown in more detail on a contemporary estate map (Foulis 1758-9, RHP 14269). This depicts a large farmstead of eight buildings, but by about 1781 there were at least ten buildings and seven yards here (May c.1780-2), the character of each building being described in a contemporary inventory (May et al c.1782). One of these buildings was a kiln barn which is described elsewhere (see NS06NE 3). By 1864, the older buildings had largely been replaced by a new steading that is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Argyllshire and Buteshire 1869, Sheet CXCIV.10). This steading comprised a yard enclosed by buildings on all sides and with a narrow entrance on the NW, and another range, immediately N, that had a water-wheel against its N wall fed, via a lade, from a pond 140m to the NW.
