Archaeology Notes

NT24SW 102 centred 213 401

NT 213 401 (centre) Fieldwalking in this field to the N of the River Tweed recovered 87 lithics in total, including a discrete scatter (c 10 x 10m) on a small knoll with good views up and downstream. The scatter includes blades and a microlithically retouched chert bladelet. Other artefacts from the field include a fine flint knife with invasive retouch.

Sponsors: Historic Scotland, University of Edinburgh Small Projects Grant

G Warren 1998

NT 213 401 A small number of test pits were excavated on the site of the lithic scatter identified during fieldwalking last year (Warren 1998). A further 34 artefacts, predominantly of blue southern uplands chert, were recovered as well as a possible anvil. The assemblage includes core scrapers as well as irregular flakes and knapping debris. The site appears to be a Mesolithic activity area of some kind.
