Activities

Project (1997)

The Public Monuments and Sculpture Association (http://www.pmsa.org.uk/) set up a National Recording Project in 1997 with the aim of making a survey of public monuments and sculpture in Britain ranging from medieval monuments to the most contemporary works. Information from the Edinburgh project was added to the RCAHMS database in October 2010 and again in 2012.

The PMSA (Public Monuments and Sculpture Association) Edinburgh Sculpture Project has been supported by Eastern Photocolour, Edinburgh College of Art, the Edinburgh World Heritage Trust, Historic Scotland, the Hope Scott Trust, The Old Edinburgh Club, the Pilgrim Trust, the RCAHMS, and the Scottish Archive Network.

Field Visit (7 November 2001)

Sign comprising a figure of a little girl (Alice in Wonderland?), painted red, standing on an 'A' alphabet block at bottom left, supporting a golden teddy bear with a bandaged leg climbing up the sign. On the right a toy clown, painted blue, stands between 'B' and 'C' alphabet blocks, supporting a golden teddy with a bandaged head. Above him is a Mr Punch, painted blue. The painted figures frame the central graphic rectangle of the sign. Above the railings is a black arched top with cut-out lettering around the cut-out figure of a girl on a swing dropping her doll.

Sign made for the Doll's Hospital in Dundas Street. The shop is now in the Canongate.

Inscriptions : Cut-out letters around arched top: THE DOLLS HOSPITAL

On rectangular graphic centre, below blue cross: THE EDINBURGH DOLL / & TEDDY HOSPITAL

Signatures : None Visible
