Scope and Content Georgian shop front, No 31 Dundas Street, Edinburgh Dundas Street, a wide avenue running downhill from Queen Street Gardens to Fettes Row, was the initial 'route of communication' between the northern New Town and Hanover Street further up the hill. Building started in 1807, probably by Thomas Bonnar. This slightly projecting Georgian ground-floor shop front has pilasters flanking the entrance, and the original shop lettering, beneath a plain cornice, above. The balconet, or guard iron, was a popular addition to first-floor drawing-room windows. In the 1820s pilastered shop fronts became very popular as, for example, in Rose and Thistle Streets in the first New Town, and were included in some terraces in the northern New Town from the start of building.
