(NH 6647 4571) Chapel Yard {NAT}

OS 6" map,(1938)

'Chapel Yard (Burial Ground) Applies to a large burying ground in Chapel Street. It was the yard of the chapel which belonged to a Franciscan, or as the OSA (OSA 1793) maintains Dominican Monastery, established here in the reign of Alexander II. At present there is not the slightest vestige remaining of either of these two objects - Cromwell having removed every stone of them for building of a citadel near the mouth of the river, neither can their site be pointed out by any of the inhabitants of the town'.

OSA 1793; Name Book 1868.

St.Mary's Chapel situated within the Chapel Yard. In a deed of 1359 certain lands were gifted to the chapel at Inverness of the blessed Virgin Mary.

C Fraser-Mackintosh 1893.

'Chapel Yard' (Burial ground) is still in use, but no trace of St.Mary's Chapel was found.

Visited by OS (W D J) 30 March 1960.

Continuing the work carried out previously (Farrell 1997), a photographic survey to enhance a number of sites which had previously been partly recorded was conducted, including:

NH 6647 4571 Chapel Yard, Inverness.

A full report is lodged with Highland SMR and the NMRS.

Sponsor: Society of Antiquaries of Scotland.

S Farrell 1998.
