Architecture Notes

NO50SW 290.03 5271 0160

The boat building shed is situated at the foot of the east pier, at the eastern end of Mid Shore. The existing building was erected by Chieftain Contracts Ltd of Bonnybridge in the early 1980s to replace an earlier wooden shed built in the 1940s as part of the war effort. The existing boat building shed is a large, rectangular, steel-framed building, clad with plastic-coated sheet metal, and has a low pitched roof. The S elevation has four large sliding doors that are the full width of the shed and open directly on to the top of the concrete slipway. Internally the shed has a sloping concrete floor and two electric overhead Morris travelling cranes.

The boat building shed formed an integral part of the St Monance boatyard, established in 1747 by James Miller & Sons. The business ceased operations in November 1992 and since then a number of the buildings and structures associated with the boatyard have been converted and re-used for other purposes in the village. The large boat shed remains disused. At the time of visiting, the building was in a semi-derelict condition and proposed for demolition. Visited by RCAHMS (EAL & DE) March 2008.
