Activities

Field Visit (1996 - 1998)

This group of structures lies to the E of the Doire field and E of the burn known as the Allt Mullach an Rathan, behind the Youth Hostel. Situated on a slight terrace, it consists of four structures, marked on the 1837 estate map. It was known as Balnabruaich or Bank and links with TOR 179. The area was probably cleared in 1845.

172a (MMc) Some 20m E of the Doire field dyke are the slight remains of a structure aligned W-E, measuring c8.5m long by c4.5m wide over walls spread to c0.6m but only c0.1m high.

172b (MMb) About 16m to the E is a long structure aligned NE-SW, measuring c22m long by c5m wide over walls spread up to c1m and standing c0.3-0.5m high. It is divided into three areas - the SW part is c10m long, a central area is only c2.5m long and the NE end is also c10m long.

172c (MMa) Some 10m to the E is a grain-drying kiln and attached structure, aligned NE-SW, with the kiln at the NE end. The maximum dimensions of the bowl of the kiln is c3m in diameter and is at least 1m deep, set against the hillside, while the attached structure is c6m long and c3m wide over walls spread to at least 0.8m and standing c0.5m high.

172d (MMd) Not seen during this survey but between 172a) and b), to the N, is a small structure c3m by c1.5m.
