Natural features have been enhanced to create a harbour for the island. The harbour was originally part of the canal cut in the early 19th century to serve the official distillery on the island. The line of the canal connecting the harbour to the houses including Distillery Cottage is clearly visible as a boggy channel running to the S side of the barn, it is silted up and no longer useable. The harbour itself has been edged and partially lined with concrete this century but the original construction of sandstone boulders can be seen on the N side of the harbour.
There is frequent evidence of disturbance to the ground on the N side of the canal including dumps of waste building materials and boulders and gravel which may represent re-deposited dredge material from the canal. There is also a large bull-dozered heap of waste building materials.
On the N side of the harbour are two concrete pillars that have been deliberately destroyed. Perhaps the remnants of a winch or crane.
The harbour and canal is not exactly as shown on the OS map which does not show the true layout as visible on the ground.
A breakwater at the mouth of the harbour (NS 4050 9107), of recent construction and apparently not an original feature of the harbour layout.
FIRAT 1996; NMRS MS 993/3
NS 386 913 and NS 400 908 The second of three phases was completed on the assessment of the islands and crannogs in Loch Lomond. Twenty-five islands were visited during the survey, the majority were found to be archaeologically sterile. The two islands in Stirling where sites were recorded have the sites listed in abbreviated form below. Full reports will be deposited in the NMRS and Central Region SMR. See also separate entries under Kilmaronock parish, West Dunbartonshire and Arrochar and Luss parishes, Argyll and Bute.

Watching Brief (24 August 2007)
NS 405 912 An archaeological watching brief was undertaken by SUAT Ltd on the renewal of the harbour works on Inchfad, an island in Loch Lomond. The replacement of the existing boat enclosure with a much larger concrete-based structure will affect the remains of 19th century canal structures, built to serve a distillery. There were partly disturbed when the present boat enclosure was built. The aim of the watching brief was to record any remains of the earlier structures which were revealed or disburbed by the renewal works. The excavations showed that the earlier harbour wall comprised a single skin of large boulders lining the cut against natural clay. No other evidence of any earlier structures was uncovered.
