Architecture Notes

Gartsherrie Township: Derelict rows of worker's cottages which were roofless and stonebuilt. There was a truck shop and cottages at the works entrance. There were surviving offices and a derelict Institute extant on the date of Hume's visit. These buildings were constructed by William Baird and Company in connection with their large ironworks. The demolition of all buildings (except the offices) had taked place by the Summer of 1969.

Visited and photographed by J R Hume, University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, 3 January 1966.

Information from NMRS MS/749/160.

The location given is the site of the now demolished group of buildings originally known as North Square. The housing and service buildings relating to the ironworks are depicted as roofed and are named North Square and South Square on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Lanarkshire, 1864, sheet VIII).

Information from RCAHMS (MMD) 16 April 1998.
