Archaeology Notes

At NH 5096 3179 on a rise, is a heather-covered stony mound, probably a cairn, measuring c.7.5m in diameter and c.0.8m high. It is edged by about seven stones, particularly prominent in the S, probably the remains of a kerb.

Activities

Field Visit (3 September 1997)

NH53SW 18 50965 31793

This cairn is situated on a low grass-grown ridge, but its position is overlooked by higher ridges on both the E and W. The cairn, which has a flat top, measures 6.8m in diameter over a kerb, by 0.5m in height. The kerb is only visible intermittently but the kerbstones appear to be graded in size from the largest on the S to the smallest around the N. An excavation trench driven into centre of the cairn from the S has been backfilled. Gorse is beginning to encroach on the cairn.
