Activities

Excavation (4 October 2016 - 10 October 2016)

Addyman Archaeology were contracted by CCG (Scotland) Ltd. to undertake a watching brief at Appleton Tower, 11 Crichton Street, Edinburgh, during construction of an extension to the building’s east entrance and associated external landscaping. A new two storey entrance is to be constructed at basement level, with an overall footprint of 91m2 and projecting 3.8m from the building’s east elevation.

Excavations revealed the groundworks to be entirely within an area of made-ground associated with Appleton Tower’s construction and sewerage, while the cobble removal to the south did not extend below the level of the underlying bedding material. No in-situ archaeological finds, features, or deposits were noted, and no further archaeological

involvement is required in this stage of works.
