Scope and Content Photographic copy of design for Appleton Tower, George Square, Edinburgh This shows a design in pencil by architect Alan Reiach (1910-92) for additions to Appleton Tower, which houses the lecture theatres and laboratories of the science faculty. Appleton Tower is the building on the lower left, and the tower on the right is David Hume Tower, designed by architects Robert Matthew Johnson-Marshall & Partners 1960-3. The drawing dates from 1972, and shows 'phases 2/3' of the project, including a long range of buildings below the tower which were never built. Appleton Tower is faced in panels of mosaic which contrast with bands of windows and deep recesses in the side walls. A tall glass stair-tower projecting above the roofline adds interest to the rear of the building. George Square was selected for the extension of the University of Edinburgh in the late 1940s. Several large new buildings and towers were constructed during the 1960s replacing Georgian townhouses, and these include the eleven-storeyed Appleton Tower, built 1963-6 to designs by architects Alan Reiach, Eric Hall & Partners.
