Field Visit (2 November 2016)

This farmstead, which comprises two buildings and an enclosure, is situated on a coastal terrace over 300m SW of the croftland of Bualintur. The dwelling (NG 40052 20118) is subrectangular on plan, measuring 9.8m from E to W by 3m transversely within a drystone wall 1.2m thick and up to 1.1m high. There is a doorway in the N wall and a pen overlies the S wall. An outshot measuring 3.5m from N to S by 2.5m has been attached to the E end of the S side of the building. The second building (NG 40092 20129) lies some 35m to the E, where it is attached to the W side of an enclosure. The building measures 6.2m from N to S by 2.2m transversely within a wall reduced to a spread of rubble 1.1m thick and 0.5m high. There is possibly an entrance close to the S end of the W side, and the interior contains a later pen. The enclosure is roughly oval on plan but with a straight NNW end and it measures about 12m from NNW to SSE by a maximum of 8m transversely.

The farmstead appears to be later in date than the lazy-bed cultivation in which it is situated. To the W and E of the farmstead the lazy-beds are comparatively well-preserved. However, in the area between the buildings and around the dwelling the earlier cultivation remains are either heavily eroded or they have been removed altogether. At least two clearance cairns stand 13m and 30m E of the enclosure respectively. The relationship of them to the cultivation or the later farmstead is not known.

Note

What may be a small township, comprising three unroofed buildings, two of which are L-shaped, is depicted on the current edition of the OS 1:10560 map (1965). One unroofed building and one enclosure are shown on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Inverness-shire, Isle of Skye 1879, sheet xliv).
