House of Daviot (formerly New House of Glack), 1876, James Matthews for J Mackenzie. On an elevated site, commanding the Garioch and now signalling 'institution' from its many-gabled skyline, it occupies an important place

in the history of the humanising of the care of the mentally ill. Rather municipal baronial, part ashlar, part squared granite rubble, rest harled. Oriel window over door in south; corbel course at top of second-floor level; corbiesteps

and central, battlemented tower with weakly expressed turrets ('a conspicuous object' - Groome). The grounds are now the site of a fascinating exercise in competitive architectural grandiosity, but the view is spectacular.
