Archaeology Notes

NG20SE 1 2807 0411

An alleged boat-shaped burial here (at Sean Dun), is on bare rock, where a burial would be impossible.

Private 6" map, annotated by T C Lethbridge, 1953.

At NG 2807 0407, a rectangular structure of stones on edge 4.5m NE-SW by 1.1m wide, blocked at each end by a slab on edge. It occurs on turf-covered outcrop. (See also NG20NW 3).

Surveyed at 1/10,000.

Visited by OS (A A) 29 May 1972.

(Formerly classified as kelp kiln). A narrow rectangular structure is situated on a rocky ridge overlooking the foreshore. It measures 4.8m from NE to SW by 1.4m transversely overall, and is defined by two parallel rows of small boulders set on edge. Each end of the structure is also formed by a boulder, but only that on the NE remains in situ.

(Canna 390).

Visited by RCAHMS (ARG), 6 June 1994.

Measured Survey (15 March 1996)

RCAHMS surveyed the structure at Suilleabeg, Sanday on 15 March 1996 with plane-table and alidade at a scale of 1:100. The plan was redrawn in ink. This inked drawing was later used as the basis for an illustration which was published in 2016 (Hunter, fig.2.55).
