Archaeological Evaluation (May 1998)
This evaluation was commissioned by Colin Armstrong Associates, Inverness, at the instance of the Highland Archaeology Srevice, as part of the conditions for planning consent for the proposed construction of holiday cottages.
The only archaeological implications are for the two possible mounds. Without excavation we cannot say very much about them, but it is better that they be preserved. The curious linear feature at the NE corner of the site is without parallel, and must be fairly modern: even so, it is worth preserving if possible. The curtilage of the farm has been very severely disturbed, and it is unlikely to yield further information.
In architectural terms, there seem to be no surviving features which warrant preservation, beyond maintaining (or restoring) their general character. The farm seems to be a fairly typical example of improved farm building of the mid nineteenth century, and the original form of the house can be paralleled over a wide area of N and NE Scotland at that period.
