Scope and Content Glen Duror, Highland, looking south-east Duror, a remote township consisting of an inn and two churches, lies at the head of Glen Duror, a broad mountain valley that runs south-east from Loch Linnhe and the west coast of Appin. This photograph, taken in 1882 looking south-east down the glen, is by the Victorian photographer, Erskine Beveridge. The Duror Inn (centre), an early 19th-century, two-storeyed whitewashed building, stands at the head of the valley. To the right, surrounded by a small drystone walled burial-ground, is Duror Church, a T-plan 'Parliamentary' church designed in 1826 by Thomas Telford. The township of Duror is associated with the Appin Murder of 1752, made famous by the author, Robert Louis Stevenson, in a dramatic but fictional account in his novel, 'Kidnapped'. James Stewart, who was accused of the murder and eventually hanged for the crime, lived at Acharn and is buried near the ruined church of Keils, south of the township.
