Magnetometry (1 May 2023 - 31 May 2023)
HU 42611 46237 (centred) A Geophysical survey (magnetometry) was carried out over an area of 3 hectares at Sweenister, Tingwall, on the Shetland Mainland. The survey revealed 16 features of probable archaeological interest. The survey demonstrated that the extent of a burnt mound is greater than the extant upstanding remains and revealed a series of possible archaeological anomalies (Anomaly 4) which may be associated with the burnt mound. The survey also revealed a suite of features that relate to the agricultural nature of the broader landscape, such as the remains of ploughing adjacent to, and likely contemporary with, an existing post-medieval trackway, and enhanced deposits within and to the south of the stone enclosure at Sweenister farmstead.
