Surveying Details

-------------------------

10 July 75. A wreck is reported at position 54 45 30N, 005 00 30W on Ardwell Point. The wreck is well broken up with small sections of about 15 -20 cms showing above the sand. The area is littered with bits and pieces of metal, including a small broken anchor. The bottom is extremely rocky. The vessel is thought to be small and mechanically propelled. Site sketch supplied in letter from A. Newton, St.Helens.

26 July 1975. Possibly the wreck of the DORIS is reported at 54 45 36N, 005 00 27W.

Source: letter from P. C. Miller dated 18 July 1975.

18 March 1976. The wreck lies either side of a large rock, just off shore, in not more than 7 metres of water. It is scattered over an area of approx 20 square metres. No highpoints of any significance are reported. The site was identified from a newspaper report, and also the ship builders plate which gave the name of the ship builders who installed the trawl gear.

Source: letter from PC Miller dated 15 October 1975.

Hydrographic Office 1995.

(Classified as wooden steam trawler, in ballast; date of loss cited as 13 November 1914). Doris: this vessel stranded at Doon Castle Point, near Ardwell Bay. Capt Stevens.

Registration: Fleetwood. Built 1902. 79grt.

(Location of loss cited as N54 45.62 W5 0.40).

I G Whittaker 1998.

The location assigned to this record remains unverified. Doon Castle Point is presumably to be equated with Castle Point, which is situated about 250m S of Ardwell Point, and forms the S corner of the same headland. Doon Castle broch (NX04SE 1) is at NX 06702 44683.

UKHO chart no. 2198 (1978, revised 1987) indicates no wreck in this vicinity, but depicts the shore as dropping off to a rocky seabed at a charted depth of about 12m.

The equation of the observed wreckage with the recorded loss of the Doris is accepted.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 25 February 2004.
