Following the launch of trove.scot in February 2025 we are now planning the retiral of some of our webservices. Canmore will be switched off on 24th June 2025. Information about the closure can be found on the HES website: Retiral of HES web services | Historic Environment Scotland
Field Visit
A dyke was encountered nearby at NB 03409 31903, running northeastwards downhill from close to the well, along the base oa steep natural outcrop for 45m. This was visible as a very low (0.1-0.15m high), thin (0.1 - 03m) bank with occasional clusters of small irregular cobbles, but became very indistinct at the bottom of the hill above the shoreline. At the point where the grid reference was taken, a much more obvious dyke intersected the first, running at a right angle up the steep slope of the outcrop to the north for 14.3m. This was entirely grassed over save for very occasional small protruding stones but stood to 0.4m in height from the outcrop and up to 0.3m wide.
