NX19NE 26 1930 9875

NX 193 987. Enclosure (possible), Girvan Mill: visible on RCAHMS air photographs taken in 1978.

(Ubdated) information in NMRS.

Centred NX 1930 9875. The detail shown on air photographs is too distant for accurate comment. Cropmarks on AY 3119 show the light-coloured, blurred outline of two apparently oval-shaped enclosures, roughly concentric, measuring overall some 120m NW-SE by about 70 m transversely. Their blurred and incomplete form suggests they are of natural origin.

Also shown on AY 3119 is a definitely artificial linear ditch cropmark, extending for some 210m from about NX 1930 9885 to about NX 1940 9865.

Information from OS Recorder (JRL) 21 November 1980.

In a field of generally level pasture on the Water of Girvan floodplain at about 7m OD, there is a broad and shallow U-shaped channel that roughly corresponds to the area between the suggested enclosures. This channel is of natural origin, and may be an oxbow formation.

There is no surface trace of the linear ditch cropmark, and no evidence of an old field boundary on this line.

Visited by OS (JRL) 24 November 1980.
