This cairn, of large granite blocks, lies on a natural slope in the wooded policies of Binghill. It measures about 8.0m by 6.0m and about 1.8m high. There is no evidence of a kerb or ditch.

Visited by OS (WDJ) 20 November 1961

The cairn was surveyed by the OS in 1864-5 and it is denoted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Aberdeenshire 1868-9, sheet lxxxv). The Ordnance Name Book describes it in the following terms (Aberdeenshire Book No.71, 63):

'A large Tumulus nearly elliptical the transverse and conjugate diameter being nearly 60 and 40 links it is composed of rough unhewn stones of different sizes piled promiscuously to the height of 6 or 7 feet in the centre. ''It is said to have been the burying place of the family of Drum, a property in the neighbouring parish, where the descendant of that family now resides''

ONB Aberdeenshire No. 71, 63

This cairn (previously noted as NJ80SE 12) is situated roughly 42m SSW of the recumbent stone circle and should not be confused with another (NJ80SE 12), which is situated roughly 55m E of the recumbent stone circle.

Visited by RCAHMS (ATW) 21 March 2007
