(A: NM 8345 0080; B: NM 8344 0079) Standing Stones (NR)

OS 6" map, Argyllshire, 2nd ed., (1900)

Stone 'A' measures 7'6" x 5' x 1'8", and has a cup mark, 3" x 1/2" deep, 2' from its base and 1'9" from its S edge. Stone 'B', which is unmarked, stands 7'9" S of 'A' and measures 8'6" x 1'3".

M Campbell and M Sandeman 1964; J H Craw 1931.

As described. The cup mark on 'A' is doubtful.

Surveyed at 1:2500.

Visited by OS (R D) 12 October 1971.

There are two standing stones situated 450m WSW of Carnassarie Castle and 135m NNE of the cairn (NM80SW 21). (Campbell and Sandeman 1964) The first, which stands 2.3m NE of the other, is aligned N and S; it is 2.6m high and 3.3m in girth at the base. Its sides are straightish, although there is a slight shoulder on the N and the top is rounded. The hollow (80mm in diameter and 20mm deep) on the W side, at a point 0.7m from ground level, is probably natural. The second stone, also aligned N and S, now leans considerably to the E; it is 2.65m high and 2.8m in girth at the base. The lower part of the stone is straight-sided, but it then tapers to a flat top.
