(NY 3379 8369) Earthwork (NR)

OS 6" map (1957)

Settlement, Calfield. The perimeter wall, in which some facing stones remain, encloses an oval area about 140 by 130 ft. The rear has been hollowed out to a depth of about 16ft and the frontal apron,

consisting partly of material pushed forward on to the natural slope in the process of levelling, and added to by some wall tumble, is a distinctive feature. There appear to have been entrances from SW and E.

RCAHMS 1920, visited 1912; G Jobey 1971.

This settlement is as described. The interior has been disturbed and used as a stone dump. A track crossing the earthwork has further mutilated the interior and the ramparts.

Surveyed at 1/10,000.

Visited by OS (MJF), 10 September 1979.
