(NY 1048 8404) Monastery (NR) (Site of)

OS 6" map (1957)

Referring to the published entry on the OS map, Reid gives conjectural accounts of the monastery at Applegarth which, he says, is mentioned in a document assigned by Bain (Calendar of Documents) to c.1215. The siting is not substantiated. The only property in the parish said by available authorities to have belonged to a monastic order is the chapelry of Dinwoodie (see NY19SW 1) a possession of the Knights Templars.

Not mentioned by D E Easson (1957).

R D Reid 1930; 1958; Name Book 1857

The reputed site of the monastery occupies a grass-covered, flat-topped knoll, c 20.0 to 25.0m in diameter. There is no trace of building.

Visited by OS (RD) 19 May 1966.
