(NX 3971 7883) Martyrs' Tomb (NAT).
OS 6" map (1957)
A tombstone, said to be the first carved by 'Old Mortality' Robert Paterson, erected to mark the communal grave of six Covenanters killed by soldiers while they were holding a service in Caldoris Wood in January 1685.
M Harper 1896
This tombstone is enclosed within a square wall 1.4m high. A plaque set into the wall states "In memory of six martyrs who suffered at this spot for their attachment to the covenanted cause of Christ in Scotland Jan 23 1685". There is no evidence to link this tombstone with the work of Robert Paterson.
Surveyed at 1:10 000.
