Capt. Riddell, touring in 1787, says "Cairn Hall farm has one of the largest cairns in Nithsdale". (There is a "Cairnhall" at NX 904 859 in the parish of Dunscore, and a "Cairn" farm at NX 911 878 in Closeburn.) (See NX89NW 13.)

There is no trace of this cairn at either site, nor any indication of one on an estate map of 1840. (Mr Kennedy, Blackwood Estate)
