NX46SW 6 4243 6033.

(NX 4243 6033) Clary House (NR) (Site of)

OS 6" map (1957)

This was the principal residence of the Bishops of Galloway in the 16th century and for part of the 17th century. At the abolition of episcopacy in Scotland it became the residence of the Earls of Galloway (G Chalmers 1824). Nothing now remains of the old building except a small portion of walling incorporated in the garden wall.

In Macfarlane (1907), Symson mentions "The Clary", the winter residence of the Earl of Galloway, among the principal buildings in Penninghame parish, while Agnew and Dumbar refer to the Castle of Cleray.

Name Book 1846

No trace of this house can now be found. The site and name are known locally.

Visited by OS (RD) 28 September 1966

Although this house no longer exists, some 16th century fireplaces and windows have been discovered incorporated within a 19th century building at NX 4246 6036. It is uncertain, however, whether these remains are associated with Clary House. (Information from R Illife, 26 September 1973)
