(NX 4765 3661) Isle of Whithorn Castle (NR)

OS 6" map (1957)

Isle of Whithorn Castle measures 32' N-S by 29'7" transversely. It is thus almost square in plan, though the L - arrangement is still retained, the re-entrant angle being filled by a wide staircase. The original entrance was at the foot on the staircase, but a porch has now been erected there and the doorway widened. A date-stone from there, dated 1674 and bearing the initials of Patrick Houston, the builder of the castle, and Margaret Gordon, his wife, is now built over a door in a lower and later wing to the E. The interior is much altered.

RCAHMS 1912, visited 1911; N Tranter 1965

Generally as described. The modern porch has now been demolished and the harling removed thus restoring the castle to its original plan and stonework.

Visited by OS (IA) 16 January 1973.
