NX64NW 1 6136 4941.

(NX 6136 4941) Barmagachan Mote (NR).

OS 6" map (1957)

This motte is conical in shape, 20' high, with a summit measuring 60' by 54'. A low circular bank about 5' wide passes around the summit, with a slight hollow some 3'6" wide on its inner side, containing a circular area 37' in diameter. The roadway has destroyed any defences that may have existed to the NE, but at the base of the motte to the SW, there is a short segment of a ditch, 18' wide and 5' deep below the crest of the counterscarp.

RCAHMS 1914, visited 1911; R W Feachem 1956; F R Coles 1893

Motte generally as described above. In addition to the ditch on the south-west, a short stretch can still be traced on the east, through which a small stream flows. The name is not in local use.

Resurveyed at 1/2500.

Visited by OS (RD) 3 February 1971.
