(NT 8237 6538) Renton Peel (NR) (site of)

OS 1:10,000 map, (1976).

For Renton House (NT86NW 65.00) and associated buildings, see NT86NW 65.00.

The tower of Renton stood on the N bank of the Eye immediately behind the present farmhouse, where its foundations are still visible. A contemporary account lists Renton Peel among 'Places castin down or burnit' by Hertford in 1544.

A A Carr 1836.

The tower at Renton was demolished during 18th century improvements.

G Chalmers (1810) 1887-1902.

A single large stone, at NT 8231 6535, was stated by the occupier of Renton House in 1956 to be all that remains of Renton Peel. This, and a slight amorphous swelling at the published OS site, approximately 18.0m in diameter, are the only evidence remaining of Renton Peel.

Visited by OS(CJP) 18 September 1956 and (NKB) 22 December 1965.

Listed. No additional information.

RCAHMS 1980.
