(NT 8897 5525) Edington Bastle (NR) (Site of)

OS 6"map, (1957).

No traces now remain of Edington Bastle which occupied a strong position close to the steep river-cliffs (in the NW corner of a field called Bastle Knowes). It was reported at the end of the 18th century (OSA 1795) that 'shaped stones, and such as are used for cornices and lintels of doors, have often been turned up by the plough' at the site. It was destroyed by an English army (G Henderson 1876 at the same time as the bastles of Ayton and Hutton (16th century) (Name Book 1856). Listed as a site (RCAHMS 1915).

No trace of building foundations was seen, no futher information obtained during investigation in 1972.
