(NX 0653 6850) Joug Stone (NAT)

OS 6" map (1957)

Called the Thieves' Stane.

M Harper 1896

An 'ancient Pictish monolith' - 'The Cairn Ryan Stane' - known locally as "The Jougs Stane' from its later use. It now forms part of the gable wall between the old Police Station and an adjoining house.

J K McDowell 1947

This probable standing stone is enbedded in the south face of two cottages at the dividing wall. The part of the stone visible measures 2.5m high and 0.5m wide and projects at its base c.0.4m from the wall, merging with the wall at its top. It is covered with a cement wash and there are no jougs attached to it. Known locally as the 'Joug Stone'.

Visited by OS (WDJ) 23 February 1968

There are two large boulders built into the wall at a cottage at the NW end of Cairnryan. One is an upright pillar 2.2m high by 0.5m thick. It is not a standing stone in situ, since there is masonry below its base, and there is no evidence that it was ever free-standing.
