NX14SW 30 10679 44556 Auchness, Cottage

(NX 1067 4455) Auchness Castle. This small, much altered tower, forming part of a modern farmhouse, is oblong on plan, with harled walls rising to three storeys and a garret, with modern dummy turrets crowning three angles. The roof is steep, the gables crowstepped, and most of the windows have been enlarged. Lower extensions are added to W and S, with a modern porch to the N. Its walls are 3' thick, and the ground floor is ceiled, not vaulted. Both Tranter and the RCAHMS date this to the 16th century, Tranter adding "It is said that Auchness was a jointure house for the adjoining large lairdship of Logan, held by the McDoualls for centuries." Donaldson, however, says that this is an imitation, being built in the baronial style, early in the 19th century.
