NT72NE 2 7737 2922

(Centre: NT 7737 2922) Fire Stone Field (NAT).

OS 6" map, Roxburghshire, (1918-38).

Stone Circle, Frogden (Site). About a mile NE. of Frogden, on the N. side of the road between Frogden and Greenlees, there were formerly five or six upright stones forming a circle "about the size of a cock-pit" (Statistical Account [OSA] 1792). This circle, which was adopted as a rendezvous by Border raiders in the Middle Ages and became known as the "Tryst", (OSA 1792) has long since disappeared, but its approximate site is indicated on the OS map by the name Five (misprinted "Fire") Stone Field.

RCAHMS 1956, visited 11 May 1939.

No further information. Neither the name 'Five Stone Field' nor any circle of stones appears on an estate plan of the lands of Frogden dated 1788, now in the farmhouse of Frogden.

Visited by OS(WDJ) 14 November 1967.
