(NT 7820 6918) Earthwork (NR)
OS 1:10,000 map, (1977).
This 'fort' is situated on a rocky knoll, partly quarried on the W, some 500 yds SW of Tower farm (480ft OD). It has been oval on plan, measuring some 120ft by 100ft within a single stony rampart, supplemented by a short outer mound to the W, where the ground is more level. The entrance has been from the E along the edge of a steep bank, flanked on the N by a projection of the rampart. A terrace lies on the slope of the bank below the entrance. (See RCAHMS 1915 plan, fig.28).
RCAHMS 1915, visited 1912.
This fort remains substantially as shown on plan. The short outer mound to the W is much reduced and measures 3.5m wide and 0.2m high. The stony rampart to the main enclosure is much spread, and measures 6.0m average width to the S and 7.0m average width to the N, with an average internal height of 1.0m. The enclosure is in a strong defensive position.
Visited by OS(JFC) 27 October 1954.
This earthwork is generally as described by the previous authorities. The quarry on the NW side has encroached on to the site to a greater extent than is shown on the existing plan.
Surveyed at 1:2500.
Visited by OS(WDJ) 27 April 1966.
