(NT 7609 6202) St Bathan's Well (NR) (covered)

OS 1:10,000 map, (1977).

The Ordnance Survey Name Book (ONB), following the New Statistical Account (NSA), describes this well as a spring which was said to have had healing powers; it was still believed that it never froze over. It is listed as a holy well by Walker (J R Walker 1883).

NSA (J Wallace) 1845; Name Book 1857.

The waters of the well flow into a basin of red granite, surmounted by a canopy bearing the opening words of the 70th psalm: 'Deus in adjutorium meum intende'.

Hist Berwickshire Natur Club 1910.

The saint commemorated is Baithene (d 600 AD), who succeeded Columba as Abbot of Iona.

W J Watson 1926.

This well is still in use; it is still covered by the canopy referred to by HBNC 1910.

Visited by OS(JD) 20 December 1954.

This well, now disused, is as described by the previous authorities.

Visited by OS (RD) 3 May 1966.
