NMRS REFERENCE

Bowden Market Cross stands in the middle of the village and has been restored as a War Memorial, only the mutilated cross-head and the octagonal, stop-chamfered base being original. It dates from the late 16th century.

Bowden obtained the privilege of holding a market in 1571, this being the first non-burghal market licensed in Scotland.
