(NT 5654 3355) Eildontree Stone (NAT) on site of Trysting Tree (NR)

The Eildontree Stone (Name Book 1859), Eildon Tree Stone (J A Wade 1861) stands on the spot where the Trysting Tree, called the Eildon Tree by Wade, originally stood. It is said to be where Thomas of Ercildoun (Thomas the Rhymer) met the Queen of the Fairies, and made his prophesies.
The Eildontree Stone (modern) is of greystone, measuring 0.45 m by 0.2 m and 1.0 m high, and has the following inscription on its N face: "This stone marks the site of the Eildon Tree where legend says Thomas the Rhymer met the Queen of the Fairies and where he was inspired to utter the first notes of the Scottish Muse. Erected by Melrose Literary Society".
