(NT 3322 6614) Church (NR) (site of)

OS 6" map (1968)

When Newbattle Abbey fell into decay (the Abbey - see NT36NW 14 - was secularised in 1589) it was rebuilt at this site, re-using the original stone. This church, which stood within a burial ground, was in use as the parish church until 1727 when it was removed to its present position (NT 3311 6606), the same stones again being used. It was dedicated to St Mary. The only part remaining at this site is a small vault, called the Lothian Vault.

No portion of the old church is now visible at this site, the Lothian Vault having been remodelled in recent times.
