An ancient moat stood on the SW side of the small knowe called 'Moat Knowe'. It was removed about 1825 by the proprietor of Dundas Castle, who pointed out its site to the field surveyor in 1855. (A circle of pecks c.12.0m in diameter is depicted on OS 6" plan).

The site of this alleged moat is occupied by ornamental gardens, and no trace of it remains.
