(NT 2010 3996) Pinkie's Hole (NR)
OS 6" map (1908).
The O.N.B. mentions a tradition that this is the place where numbers of those killed in battle were buried.
OS Name Book 1856.
Pinkie's Hole (NAT)
OS 6" map (1965).
This quarry pit lies in Sheriff Muir plantation, about 100 yds. due S of the standing stones (NT24SW 1). It is oval on plan, measuring 90' by 65' and from 10' to 15' in depth. It is of considerable age since it is included among the antiquities of Stobo parish in the OSA (1792).
It is possible that it is of Roman origin since a large gravel- pit was worked by the garrison of the Roman fort at Happrew, 1/4 mile W.
RCAHMS 1967, visited 1964.
NT 2009 3996. This feature is generally as described above.
Visited by OS (EGC), 21 May 1962.
