(NT 1002 4038) Earthwork (NR)
OS 6" map (1968)
There is an earthwork, measuring about 170' by 80' within double banks and a medial ditch, situated at the foot of the W slopes of Stirkfield Rig, on low-lying ground drained by the Kirklawhill Burn. The main road from Edinburgh has been driven across the E half of the work, and the remainder has been heavily reduced by cultivation. On the W, where they are best preserved, the inner bank measures 24' in width and stands to a height of 1' internally and 3'6" externally, measured from the bottom of the ditch, while the outer bank measures 26' in width and stands to a height of 2'6" above the bottom of the ditch and 6" externally. The entrance, marked by a 16' wide causeway, is in the S. The interior is featureless. The ONB records that "several covered drains" and a quern were found here when the road was being built.
RCAHMS 1967, visited 1953; Name Book 1857
This earthwork is as described. The flat-bottomed ditch is similar to that of a homestead moat.
Surveyed at 1:2500.
