(NT 0893 8726) The Pends (NR)

OS 25"map, (1926)

The Pends: Gatehouse, Dunfermline Abbey. This gatehouse seems to be mainly of late 14th century date, but there is some evidence to suggest that a gatehouse at or about this position was contemplated when the frater (NT08NE 1.07) was originally built (early 14th century). The gatehouse contains a vaulted transe at the street level and two upper storeys.

RCAHMS 1933.

"The Pends" is as described.

Visited by OS (D W R) 18 February 1974.

NT 0894 8725 SUAT conducted a three-day watching brief on three excavations by Scotia Gas Networks in advance of re-lining gas pipes within the scheduled area to the S and W of Dunfermline Abbey. The excavations were largely confined to existing pipe trenches, and the re-lining method was successful in ninimising disturbance of archaeological remains. However, evidence was found of midden deposits, previous road surfaces and possible demolition layers. The work (SUAT site code DF15) took place during 7th,8th,9th January 2008.

David Bowler (SUAT Ltd), 30 January 2008.
