This is the spot where it is said that the Regent Murray fell on the 23rd January 1570, having been fired at by Hamilton of Bothwellhaugh as he was passing in procession through the town.

Name Book 1856

A plaque, erected in 1875, on the front of the Sheriff Court states that the Regent Murray was killed 'oppisite this tablet'.
