NT08NE 1.9 0896 8728.

(NT 0896 8728) Site of cloisters, Dunfermline Abbey: The W side of the cloister was usually occupied by the guest chambers. In Dunfermline, however, the space available was so restricted and the fall in ground level so pronounced that there was no room for more than a wall and the guest chambers were erected on the W side of the road passing through the pends (NT08NE 1.4) on a site that later came to be associated with the Royal Palace (NT08NE 1.1).

On the S of the quadrangle was the refectory or dining hall, and on the E side, the chapter house and dormitories.

J M Webster 1948.
