(NT 069 379) On low-lying ground, 300 yds SW of Skirling Mains farmhouse, and 27 yds E of the left bank of the Spittal Burn, a sub-rectangular enclosure with an annexe on its E side appears as a cropmark on National Survey air photographs. The enclosure, which measures internally about 200ft by 160ft, is bounded by a ditch represented on the photography by a dark line about 10ft in width.
There is an entrance about 12ft wide in the middle of the W side. The annexe is trapezoidal on the plan, with maximum internal measurements of about 220ft by 130ft. It is bounded by a ditch, represented on the photographs by a somewhat narrower line than the enclosure ditch, and has an entrance near the NE corner. Direct access between the enclosure and the annexe was probably provided by a gap in the E side of the enclosure ditch. Several short dark lines which appear on the photograph in both the enclosure and the annexe may indicate timber buildings.
